Although condensation on your toilet tank may seem harmless, it can damage your bathroom. A sweating toilet drips water onto your floor, and over time, the moisture can damage your flooring and rot your sub-flooring, requiring expensive repairs. Luckily, you can take a few steps to stop your toilet tank from sweating.
Remove humidity from the bathroom
Toilet tank condensation happens when warm, humid air comes into contact with a cold surface. To prevent toilet tank sweat, you must remove humidity from your bathroom. Try:
Taking shorter, cooler showers, especially on warm, humid days.
Using your bathroom exhaust fan when you take a bath or shower. Leave the door ajar to allow drier air to enter the bathroom. Leave the fan on for 10 to 15 minutes after your shower. You can also install a timer on your fan to save energy.
Don’t flush the toilet immediately after a shower. Wait until the air has dried out a bit before filling the toilet tank with fresh, cool water.
Don’t open windows on warm days. This will only worsen the problem. Instead, use a dehumidifier or air conditioner to remove moisture from the air. Install a drip tray You can catch the water before it reaches the floor by placing a drip tray under your toilet. It won’t prevent sweating, and may look unsightly, but it’s inexpensive, and you’ll protect your flooring. Make sure you empty the tray every couple of days. Insulate your toilet tank You can purchase toilet tank insulation kits at your local plumbing supply store. You must empty and dry the tank before gluing the pieces of insulation to the interior walls. Alternatively, you can replace your toilet tank with an insulated tank. Replace your toilet Installing a new, low-flow toilet can help reduce your water bills and prevent condensation because less cold water will be flowing into the tank. Purchasing a new, efficient toilet with an insulated tank will probably stop the sweats altogether. Install a mixing valve A mixing valve, or a sweat valve, is a device that allows small amounts of hot water into your toilet tank so the water isn’t so cold. These valves are best suited for areas like a basement with easy access to your home’s plumbing. Otherwise, valve installation is best left to professional plumbers.
